AU Optronics Corp. Reports February 2010 Consolidated Revenue

HSINCHU, Taiwan, March 8 -- AU Optronics Corp. ("AUO" or the "Company") (TAIEX: 2409; NYSE: AUO) today announced its preliminary consolidated February 2010 revenue of NT$32,666 million, down by 14.5% from January and up by an impressive 112.4% year-over-year.

Due to the Chinese New Year holidays and fewer workdays in February, large-sized panel (a) shipments for February 2010, with applications as desktop monitors, notebook PCs, and LCD TVs, totaled around 8.01 million units, a 15.3% drop month-over-month. As for small- and medium-sized panels, the shipments amounted to around 16.09 million units, down by approximately 17.6% from the previous month.

(a) Large-size refers to panels that are 10 inches and above in diagonal measurement while small and medium size refers to those below 10 inches.

Go digITal With the e-Skills Week Closing Event!

BRUSSELS, March 8, 2010--     The e-Skills Week closing event Go digITal! took place on Friday 5 March
2010, in Brussels, Belgium. With a diverse programme from high level speakers
to student Q&A sessions with ICT professionals, the event was the culmination
of the e-Skills Week campaign, which highlights the growing demand for
skilled ICT users and professionals in Europe. The event was streamed live
online through the e-Skills Week portal http://eskills-week.ec.europa.eu.

    Go digITal! presented the results of the activities organised in more
than 20 countries by over 200 organisations and industry partners during the
campaign, and rewarded the best practices observed. It also formulated
recommendations to ensure sustainability of the e-Skills Week action.

    Starting with welcome words by Jean-Noel Durvy, Director for Innovation
Policy, DG Enterprise and Industry, European Commission, Bridget Cosgrave,
Executive Director, DIGITALEUROPE, and Marc Durando, Executive Director,
European Schoolnet, the Le Square meeting centre hosted a full day of
activities focused on ICT skills and careers.

   
    - The winners of the e-Skills Week competition were recognised
      in the award ceremony, with prizes offered by ACER, Employability
      Alliance, Cisco, CEPIS, Hewlett Packard and European Schoolnet. The

    - Five parallel interactive workshops invited the participants
      to learn more about IT careers through speed dates with ICT
      professionals and students, join the demonstrations of the e-Skills

      people were presented.

    - An exhibition area with the stands of 16 exhibitors gave a
      practical view of what are IT jobs to young people.

    - The participants could also play with up to date games
      consoles as well as vintage games and explored audiovisual and digital
      art tools in the interactive space. Additionally, an internet cafe was
      provided.

    Over 500 students from secondary and tertiary schools, teachers,
professionals and ICT practitioners, SMEs, as well as high level figures from
companies, from the European Commission and Ministries of education gathered
to exchange their experiences and views to build a competitive Europe.

    An evening party closed the event in the trendy Halles and Cafe St Gery.
Electro DJs and live sets, VJing, digital art, high tech installations and
Belgium's first interactive bar kept the mood high to the celebration of the
first-ever European e-Skills Week.

CHESSINGTON, England, March 8, 2010--     Reliance High-Tech have teamed up with GPS technology leader
buddi to monitor and track riders as they cycle 549km from Rosslare to
Edinburgh to help raise GBP1m in aid of Sport Relief and the Dallaglio
Foundation.

    The riders will be provided with a GPS-enabled buddi that is
light and comfortable for the wearer. Its compact form factor makes this
device smaller and lighter than any other currently available but can
accurately locate a person to within a few metres. The Reliance Monitoring
Centre will correlate the riders' information with each device and through
sophisticated mapping software will monitor and track each rider's progress
across Ireland. Operators at the BS5979 CAT II monitoring centre are able to
provide instant updates on the riders' location and map their path taken
along the route.

Why DRM Doesn't Work: Assassin's Creed 2

A simple reason why DRM doesn't work; you screw your own customers. Let's take a look at Ubisoft's new game, Assassin's Creed 2. The game REQUIRES you to be logged into to their activation server the entire time. This means activation AND play time are tied to their own servers. If they go down, the product you paid for is now useless.

I'll do what I can to get more information on what the issue is here first thing tomorrow and push for a resolution and assurance this won't happen in the future. I realise that's not ideal but there's only so much I can do on a weekend as I'm not directly involved with the server side of this system.


Since you already bought the game, we don't care about fixing the issue ASAP. We can wait till tomorrow. How many gamers purchased this game and found this? Don't support companies that put this type of lunacy on their products! DRM is just wrong and takes away consumer rights.

In playback, you can choose to display only photos that contain a specific registered face using Category Playback.  The contrast AF system adopted by the LUMIX DMC-G10 is not only accurate and easy to use, but also very fast. Users can choose from a wide range of AF modes, including AF Tracking, 1-area AF, Face Detection AF/AE and 23-area AF.

The LUMIX G10's Live View Finder, with a resolution of 202,000-dot equivalent, 1.04x (0.52x*) retains the viewability of an optical viewfinder and displays information about its settings that users can see without removing their eye from the subject.  The 60 fps Live View is powered by the Live MOS sensor, which takes signals directly from the image sensor and sends them continuously to the LCD, in real time. Both the Live View Finder and LCD provide approximately 100% field of view. This allows the user, when composing a shot, to check the framing accurately from corner to corner. The 3.0-inch large 460,000-dot high-resolution LCD with wide viewing angle automatically controls the brightness according to the situation as an Intelligent LCD.

The intuitive touch-control shooting elevates the camera's operability, letting the user adjust auto focus (AF) simply by touching the subject on the large 3.0-inch 460,000-dot high-resolution LCD. With the touch-screen operation, users can even snap a photo by touching the LUMIX G2's screen.  Additionally, the touch-screen operation excels not only for shooting but also during playback.  Users can touch one thumbnail viewed among many to quickly and easily see the full size of the desired photo.  Also, to view images one-by-one, photos can be dragged across the screen to browse as though flipping the pages of a book.

While using the manual focus, users can enlarge a subject by touching it and then choosing to enlarge it by 1x, 5x or 10x and then smoothly moving the part by dragging it on the screen. With this touch operation, menu settings can be changed quickly; cutting the time it takes to navigate using standard cursors. However, all setting changes can still be done using the control pad, if preferred.

The LUMIX G2 records 1280 x 720 HD videos in the AVCHD Lite format, which increases recording capacity and is highly compatible with audio-visual equipment. With a dedicated video record button, users can easily start recording a video. WASHINGTON, March 5 -- The Federal Communications Commission's Broadband Omnibus Initiative team on Friday (March 5) outlined its proposed reforms of the universal service and intercarrier compensation programs that will be included in the FCC's National Broadband Plan, due to Congress on March 17.  The following is a statement by Kathleen Grillo, Verizon senior vice president of federal regulatory affairs:

"The broadband team's recommendations are bold and practical.  The commission appears to want to take these tough problems head-on and provide a rational framework for repairing the broken subsidy systems.  The industry should support this proposal.  It makes sense to focus limited Universal Service Fund resources on broadband, rather than layering new support on top of existing voice subsidies.  And it is critical to move forward to promptly reform the intercarrier compensation system.

"We hope the commission will also focus its attention in the coming months on how to fix the broken contribution system.  The contribution factor is rising every year and will hit a whopping 15.3 percent next quarter, so we need to move to a different model sooner rather than later.

"If we get the policies right, the transformative power of broadband can make real improvements to health care IT, energy conservation, education and national security.  That's why Verizon is investing billions of dollars in FiOS, the largest fiber-to-the-home network in the country, and will be rolling out 4G technology, the next generation of wireless broadband, as fast as we can."

NEW YORK, March 5 -- Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) has recently learned of an unsolicited "mini-tender offer" made by TRC Capital Corp. to Verizon shareholders to purchase up to 3 million shares of Verizon stock at $28 per share.

Verizon, which is not associated in any way with TRC or this offer, recommends against shareholders tendering their shares to TRC because the offer price is below the current market price for Verizon shares.  Verizon urges investors to obtain current market quotations for their shares, consult with their broker or financial adviser, and exercise caution with respect to TRC's offer.  Verizon shares closed yesterday at $29.27 on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

Verizon currently has more than 2.8 billion shares outstanding, and the offer represents approximately one-tenth of 1 percent of shares outstanding.  So-called "mini-offers" are designed to seek less than 5 percent of a company's outstanding shares in order to fall below the threshold of various investor protections provided by U.S. securities law.  The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has issued an investor alert (see http://www.sec.gov/investor/pubs/minitend.htm), noting that in making these offers at below-market prices, "bidders are hoping that they will catch investors off guard if the investors do not compare the offer price to the current market price."

Verizon shareholders who have already tendered their shares may withdraw their shares by providing notice in the manner described in the TRC documents.

It seems there are more and more people becoming self employed these days - or at the very least, many folks are starting a side business, turning a hobby into some extra income or doing some type of independent contractor work. Whether you've decided to turn your blog into a business, sell a multi-level marketing product, or rent a storefront to start selling your homemade jewelry, there are some mistakes you will definitely want to avoid.

Not Setting Aside Money for Taxes

This seems simple enough, but is probably one of the biggest tax mistakes people make  among others. The number of people I talk to that haven't set aside money for taxes is pretty high. If you are a 1099 contractor, the company you are contracted with does not pull out taxes for you.

At first, this feels great because your paycheck is higher - then reality sets in when it's time to file your taxes. Uncle Sam requires you to make quarterly estimated tax payments. If you don't have enough paid in for your estimated taxes you could face some penalties.

Another thing people fail to realize is the self-employment tax that's due. This was a stiff kick in the gut to me after my first year of self-employment. Uncle Sam charges 15.3% tax for self-employed in addition to your regular income tax! This is equivalent to the FICA tax on a regular paycheck. The good news is that you can deduct half of your self-employment tax, but you still have to pay!

What I do to help me throughout the year is any time I get paid, I set aside 20% of my money right away into a separate bank account, which is labeled Uncle Sam's. Then each quarter I take that money and make a quarterly estimated tax payment.

Not Keeping Track of Income and Expenses

This is one of those mundane tasks that most owners hate, but every business must do in order to maximize deductions as well as protect themselves from an IRS audit. A business owner should really be organized when it comes to keeping track of income and expenses. Don't write down your mileage on a napkin each time you travel. Your bookkeeper will thank you for that. Or, if you are acting as bookkeeper you'll appreciate your organization as your business grows.

Get a notebook, use a spreadsheet or some budgeting or personal finance software to track the amount of your expenses, the category (i.e. office supplies) and a brief explanation of what you purchased etc.

Don't rely on your memory to come through for you when you need to report an expense. Keep your receipts, develop a system and keep up to date.

I typically store all my receipts in one place for the week and then each Friday I pay bills, track my expenses in a spreadsheet, review my income and take a look at profit and loss statements.

This may be a bit much depending on what type of business you are in, so just be sure you come up with a system that works for you. Avoiding these mistakes as a self-employed person will help free up time, save you money and protect your business so you can maintain a long and profitable career.

In his remarks about HIPAA 5010 compliance, Singh highlighted strategies, including complete replacement, remediation and step-up / step-down strategies available to healthcare organizations in transitioning from HIPAA 4010A1 to 5010. In addition, Singh spoke about the various testing options - such as internal testing, external testing, end-to-end testing and collaborative testing - that healthcare organizations could adopt on the path to HIPAA 5010 compliance.

"While HIPAA 5010 impacts a finite set of IT systems, it's risky to minimize the complexity of the transition," said Singh. "The only way to mitigate the 5010 migration risks is to plan carefully and to develop testing strategies that touch multiple scenarios and systems - both internal as well as external."

Dr. Joe Nichols pointed out that even though the ICD-10 compliance deadline of Oct 1, 2013 appeared fairly distant, the implications and impacts represented by ICD-10 are enormous and planning must start now. He compared the ICD-10 impact to that of Y2K, where complexity arose from the sheer pervasiveness of the legacy code. In his presentation, Nichols highlighted the scope and complexity of the ICD-10 transition, and discussed why ICD-10 was a critical transition for the healthcare industry, both for its far-reaching impacts and benefits.

"While translation is an important part of the solution and the industry is justifiably discussing 'crosswalks,' only five percent of the ICD-10 codes map directly to ICD-9 codes and only 26% of the ICD-9 codes map directly to ICD-10 codes," said Nichols. "Developing an effective translation strategy is considerably more involved than a simple one-to-one mapping of codes."

The session was concluded with recommendations from the Edifecs team to start 5010 projects right away, to start defining ICD-10 plans very quickly and to work closely with vendors and trading partners while planning and executing 5010 and ICD-10 projects.

The Patient's Guide Survey Reveals Consumers' Attitudes toward Cosmetic Skincare Concerns

COSTA MESA, Calif., March 5 -- Almost three-quarters (74%) of American consumers surveyed would prefer a non-surgical procedure over liposuction even if it meant more treatments were needed. According to a survey commissioned by The Patient's Guide, a family of online publications dedicated to specific skin concerns and treatments, 48% of consumers are more interested in results when considering a body contouring procedure than cost (21%), safety (11%), length of recovery (10%), and surgery (10%).

"This year we'll see significant advances in body contouring including treatment of fat and cellulite," said Dr. Eric Bernstein, Director of Laser Surgery and Cosmetic Dermatology Centers, Clinical Associate Professor of Dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania. "Technology is so fast moving in medicine and especially with lasers, that to stay up to date, the web is the only option.       fat removal procedure if it cost more than a surgical procedure such
      as liposuction.
  --  Most consumers searching for tattoo removal options fall into the
      31-40 age range (66%), and got a tattoo of someone else's name (54%)
      when they were between 18-24 years old (54%).
  --  Interestingly, most consumers are interested in removing their tattoo
      because they broke up with someone (48%).
  --  The majority of consumers surveyed are most concerned with wrinkles
      (54%) than age spots (14%), sagging skin (17%), facial veins (12%),
      and enlarged pores (5%).
  --  Consumers are most interested in injections (43%) as a treatment for
      wrinkles.

Kids Get Fit While Having Fun at New Interactive, Virtual Entertainment Facility

PEARLAND, Texas, March 5 -- The ongoing advancements in gaming technology have created a generation of kids more interested in the latest, greatest video games than traditional outdoor games such as freeze tag, hide-n-seek or hop scotch.  To address this craze, The InZONE©, an interactive gaming venue, will open its doors Saturday, March 6, to serve Pearland and the greater Houston area.  Equipped with the latest interactive games, this next-generation children's entertainment center integrates physical activity with virtual gaming, provides a safe environment for youth to play and engage in friendly competition as well as gives toddlers an outlet to interact with other children while parents relax.

CUPERTINO, Calif., March 5 -- Apple® today announced that its magical and revolutionary iPad will be available in the US on Saturday, April 3, for Wi-Fi models and in late April for Wi-Fi + 3G models. In addition, all models of iPad will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK in late April.

Beginning a week from today, on March 12, US customers can pre-order both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models from Apple's online store (http://www.apple.com) or reserve a Wi-Fi model to pick up on Saturday, April 3, at an Apple retail store.

Starting at just $499, iPad lets users browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more. iPad is just 0.5 inches thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds--thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook--and delivers battery life of up to 10 hours.*

iPad's revolutionary Multi-Touch(TM) interface makes surfing the web an entirely new experience, dramatically more interactive and intimate than on a computer. You can read and send email on iPad's large screen and almost full-size "soft" keyboard or import photos from a Mac®, PC or digital camera, see them organized as albums, and enjoy and share them using iPad's elegant slideshows. iPad makes it easy to watch movies, TV shows and YouTube, all in HD, or flip through the pages of an ebook you downloaded from Apple's new iBookstore while listening to your music collection.

The App Store on iPad lets you wirelessly browse, buy and download new apps from the world's largest app store. iPad includes 12 new innovative apps designed especially for iPad and will run almost all of the more than 150,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®. The iTunes® Store gives iPad users access to the world's most popular online music, TV and movie store with a catalog of over 12 million songs, over 55,000 TV episodes and over 8,500 films including over 2,500 in stunning high definition. All the apps and content you download on iPad from the App Store, iTunes Store and iBookstore will be automatically synced to your iTunes library the next time you connect with your computer.

Pricing & Availability

iPad will be available in Wi-Fi models on April 3 in the US for a suggested retail price of $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, $699 for 64GB. The Wi-Fi + 3G models will be available in late April for a suggested retail price of $629 for 16GB, $729 for 32GB and $829 for 64GB.  iPad will be sold in the US through the Apple Store® (http://www.apple.com), Apple's retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers.

iPad will be available in both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models in late April in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. International pricing will be announced in April. iPad will ship in additional countries later this year.

The iBooks app for iPad including Apple's iBookstore will be available as a free download from the App Store in the US on April 3, with additional countries added later this year.
